Kernel Regression Trees

چکیده
This paper presents a novel method for learning in domains with continuous target variables. The method integrates regression trees with kernel regression models. The integration is done by adding kernel regressors at the tree leaves producing what we call kernel regression trees. The approach is motivated by the goal of trying to take advantage of the different biases of the two regression methodologies. The presented method is implemented. Kernel regression trees are comprehensible and accurate regression models of the data. Experimental comparisons on both artificial and real world domains revealed the superiority of kernel regression trees when compared to the two individual approaches. The use of kernel regression at the trees leaves gives a significant performance gain. Moreover, a good performance level is achieved with much smaller trees than if kernel regression was not used. Compared to kernel regression our method improves its comprehensibility and execution time.

Partial Linear Trees
Partial linear regression is a successful method of dealing with regression tasks. This technique integrates a linear polynomial with a kernel model with the goal of being able to handle nonlinear problems. Kernel models are a kind of instance-based learners and as such do not obtain any intelligible model of the data, which is not the case of linear polynomials. By integrating these two approa...
متن کاملA preliminary empirical comparison of recursive neural networks and tree kernel methods on regression tasks for tree structured domains
The aim of this paper is to start a comparison between Recursive Neural Networks (RecNN) and kernel methods for structured data, specifically Support Vector Regression (SVR) machine using a Tree Kernel, in the context of regression tasks for trees. Both the approaches can deal directly with a structured input representation and differ in the construction of the feature space from structured dat...
متن کاملFunctional Models for Regression Tree Leaves
This paper presents a study about functional models for regression tree leaves. We evaluate experimentally several alternatives to the averages commonly used in regression trees. We have implemented a regression tree learner (HTL) that is able to use several alternative models in the tree leaves. We study the effect on accuracy and the computational cost of these alternatives. The experiments c...
متن کاملFifty Years of Classification and Regression Trees
Fifty years have passed since the publication of the first regression tree algorithm. New techniques have added capabilities that far surpass those of the early methods. Modern classification trees can partition the data with linear splits on subsets of variables and fit nearest neighbor, kernel density, and other models in the partitions. Regression trees can fit almost every kind of tradition...
متن کاملEffects of Deficit and Cutoff Irrigation During Different Phenological Stages of Fruit Growth on Production in Mature Almond Trees cv. ‘Mamaei’
Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) is commonly used during different phenological stages of fruit growth and development in almond trees to reduce the amount of irrigation water applied without or with only very small reductions in yield. Therefore, to study the effects of deficit and cutoff irrigation during different phenological stages of fruit growth and development in almond cv. “Mamaei” p...
